Knee replacements and how Physiotherapy can help you - Darragh Bolton MISCP
Knee replacement surgery is a common procedure in Ireland, with around 2200 performed each year due to osteoarthritis according to Statista.com . Physiotherapy is an important part of the recovery process, both before and after surgery. Prehab, a period of strength training before the operation, can help make post-op rehab easier.
During knee replacement surgery, the end of the femur and top of the tibia are replaced with a metal and plastic replacement. Recovery from this procedure can take several weeks to months, and regular physiotherapy is essential for successful rehabilitation.
Pre-op rehab can last between 4 and 12 weeks, depending on the hospital and surgeon. The goal of pre-op physiotherapy is to strengthen the leg muscles as much as possible, particularly the quads, glutes, hamstrings, and calf muscles. This will help make recovery easier after the surgery, especially in the early post-op stages. Physiotherapists will also educate patients about the TKR process and prepare them for what to expect.
During post-op rehab, the focus is on ensuring the wound is safe and avoiding infection. Regaining range of motion, especially full knee extension, is a priority. This can be difficult due to pain and swelling, but as these reduce, function will improve. Basic exercises and advice will be provided by the hospital, but a tailored program from a private physiotherapist will be more effective. Strengthening the thigh and glute muscles will be a significant focus, as this will help with functional tasks such as getting out of a chair and walking.
The final goal of rehab is to return patients to their pre-surgery level of function, or at least to a level where they can manage their day-to-day activities independently and without pain. Most people will return to activities such as walking, driving, shopping, and dancing after a few months of physiotherapy. Recovery time can vary, but adhering to advice from the medical team and working hard on exercises will lead to the best outcomes.
