Darragh Bolton is the owner of Ultimate Physio and a native of Tuam Co. Galway. He is a Chartered Physiotherapist graduating from University College Cork in 2020 and is also a qualified Strength & Conditioning specialist graduating from Limerick Institute of Technology, as part of his Strength & Conditioning qualification. His physiotherapy placements were all in HSE locations throughout Ireland covering all areas of physiotherapy including neurological, respiratory, orthopedics, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal outpatients. Galway.

Darragh specializes in musculoskeletal therapy (MSK) and sports injuries using hands-on, dry needling, and exercise therapy, however, he also has a large scope in multiple areas of Physiotherapy including experience in treating neurological conditions in pediatrics. He has worked with many different sports teams, both as a Physiotherapist and as a Strength & Conditioning coach. These include the Canadian Olympic Women’s Rugby sevens team, Canadian Olympic rowing team, Galway Senior hurlers, Galway Minor footballers, and various club GAA and rugby teams. Darragh is currently the club physiotherapist for Tuam Stars GAA club. Darragh has also worked in gyms as a gym instructor helping people achieve their fitness goals and tutored on a personal trainer course for a period.

Why did you choose to be a physiotherapist?

I have always been interested in health and fitness from a very young age playing football with Tuam Stars GAA and rugby with Tuam R.F.C. Unfortunately, at the age of 18 and 22, I sustained two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction injuries and a ruptured hamstring. I feel the rehabilitation process I went through gave me an interest in becoming a physiotherapist. By going through that rehab I also feel I can connect and have more empathy with patients. I also felt I could put my strength & conditioning knowledge to good use in helping people overcome their injuries and return to full function.

What is your favorite thing about being a physiotherapist?

I like the relationship I build with my patients. It’s rewarding to see patients progress from session to session and eventually, get back to their pre-injury state. By coming into this profession later in life I feel it’s an honor to be able to help my patients overcome their pain and injuries.  It’s a very important job and one I enjoy and am grateful for.

What are some treatment options used to treat conditions?

As a member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and a CORU-registered Chartered Physiotherapist, I am qualified to help people with various injuries and conditions. I usually see people with muscle and joint pain, joint replacements, and sports injuries in the clinic but I have helped people post-stroke, Multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, and pediatrics with cerebral palsy recovering from spinal dorsal rhizotomies and even kids with balance and coordination difficulties. As a Strength & Conditioning coach, I help athletes of all ages and abilities develop and increase their sports performance whether that’s youth development focusing on balance and coordination or speed and strength in adults. It’s a job with lots of variety.

What do you do with your free time?

I’m very lucky that my partner, Tara is as active as I am, so we do a lot of running, hiking, kayaking, camping workouts, and anything outdoors. We both love to travel with is a great thing to be able to enjoy with a partner. I do mountain biking when I can, and I used to compete in Olympic weightlifting.

Words of wisdom!

Manual treatments and hands-on treatments such as massage and dry needling can help to a degree but it’s the advice from your Chartered Physiotherapist and exercise that helps you recover from the injury and pain. A lot of people don’t realize this, but you can exercise when in a bit of pain, and the more positive you stay throughout your rehab the better the outcome will be for you. Consistency is the key, so keep positive and keep going.
